Introducing “The 1653” 4/5wt Fly Reel

The 1653

Inspired by the publication date of Izaak Walton’s iconic book The Compleat Angler in 1653, we’re proud to announce that our new 4/5wt feather-light fly reel, “The 1653,” is officially in production. After refining multiple prototypes, we are on track for a summer 2025 release.

For those unfamiliar with Walton’s The Compleat Angler, it is widely regarded as one of the most influential environmental books ever published. Beyond its celebrated status as a literary classic, Walton’s work offers a deep reflection on Christian stewardship of nature, laying the groundwork for many of the wildlife management principles we uphold today.

The design of The 1653 draws inspiration from the Allcock & Co. Ventilated Aerial Reel, a legendary English model from the 1890s. Known for its exceptional craftsmanship, these early reels were among the best of their time. The striking six-spoke front-flange design remains a defining feature of the Aerial reels, and it’s this aesthetic that we’ve sought to honor with our own modern interpretation.

Some of the features of The 1653 include:
– 3″ in diameter
– Feather light (somewhere south of 4.5 oz)
– Slim profile (roughly 1-1/16″ wide)
– Durable and weather proof
– Trimmed in brass
– Affordable – We are targeting somewhere less than $225
